While many partners can live happily together; they just can’t sleep well side by side. Research from the Better Sleep Council (BSC) found that on average, one in three Americans report that their partner’s sleep problems negatively impact their own quality of sleep.

If you or your partner aren’t sleeping well, it can take a toll on your relationship

“Sleeping together is an important way for couples to feel connected with each other. If you or your partner aren’t sleeping well, it can take a toll on your relationship,” says relationship expert Lissa Coffey from the Better Sleep Council (BSC). “Common sense tells us that if you wake up tired and cranky, chances are you aren’t going to be the most loving person.”

If your mattress is less than five to seven years old, but you and your partner are still suffering from poor sleep, your partner’s sleep habits may be the problem. This Valentine’s Day, bring harmony back to the bedroom and your relationship with these sleep solutions from relationship expert Lissa Coffey and the Better Sleep Council:

Your partner kicks in his or her sleep, waking you up.

Make sure your bed gives each person adequate sleep surface. If you are sharing a double (full–size) mattress, that only gives each person as much room as sleeping in a crib! Couples should share a mattress no smaller than queen-size.

Your partner likes it hot, but you like it cool.

Temperature is a major issue in many relationships. Ideally, your bedroom should be a cool 60–65 degrees Fahrenheit. But a few simple adjustments can make it possible for a person who craves heat and a person who craves cool to sleep side by side comfortably.

Double fold the blankets so there is more coverage on one side.

Invest in a dual-control electric blanket or a twin-size electric blanket for one side.

Your partner snores, keeping you up at night.

Snoring can be a serious health concern, so make sure to consult your physician. If your partner’s snoring is not a serious health condition, try alternative treatments like investing in anti-snore pillows, sprays or nasal strips that are designed to help people breathe more easily. If your partner’s snoring persists, try foam earplugs before you try a different room.

Your partner tosses and turns.

It may be your mattress. If your mattress is uncomfortable, it can lead to restless sleep. Mattresses should be evaluated every five to seven years for comfort and support.

Your partner loves to cuddle, but you like your space while you sleep.

Compromise. Before falling asleep spend some time snuggling together and then agree to sleep apart.

Your sleep schedules don’t match.

Try finding a bedtime that works for both of you. If your partner turns in early and you’re a night owl, try reading a book with a personal book lamp until you’re ready to nod off. If you’re an early riser compared to your sleep partner, be considerate in the early morning. Keep overhead lights off and use minimal lighting while your partner is sleeping.

Your bedroom feels more like an office than a place to sleep.

Your bedroom should only be used for sleep and sex. Keep work, laptops, PDAs and televisions out of the bedroom. This creates a much more relaxing and romantic atmosphere, and will give you both a better night’s sleep.

The BSC is devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep to good health and quality of life and about the value of the sleep system and sleep environment in pursuit of a good night’s sleep find out more at their website www.bettersleep.org/

It’s time to get back to basics about the do’s and don’ts of sleep! For some people, getting a sound sleep is the number one thing they would ever dream of!

It’s time to get back to basics about the do’s and don’ts of sleep!

For some people, getting a sound sleep is the number one thing they would ever dream of! There are people who have gotten so far away from the basics that they no longer enjoy that same restful night that so many of us take for granted. A lot of people get caught up in the fast paced game of earning money to survive and they sometimes go over the limit.

In order to fulfill their goals at any cost, they create some initial bad habits which eventually get bigger and turn into a physical or mental disorder. So what are the things that lead to these problems? Instead of putting themselves into peaceful and prosperous life, they end up beaten and out of energy? This was the result of not listening to the “do’s” and instead following the “don’ts” of proper sleep.

In life, there are a lot of things that we should practice for happiness and well-being. The race to get ahead sometimes takes the lead in our priorities and this can be a good thing for a while until it goes too far. Scheduling in a solid 8 hours of sleep each night is something that the wisest people have always maintained in their lives. You can’t make good decisions or keep your head about you if you are frazzled and distraught.

Furthermore, the sleep you do get that night will not be as productive if you lie down with all these worries and problems rushing through your brain. One hour in the morning where you work with a clear head and a relaxed mind will oftentimes produce ten times the results that an entire day with a frazzled and distraught mind could never produce.

In terms of the “don’ts” about sleep, some people tend to think that medicine will help them to get the kind of sleep they need. Rather than scheduling in the amount of time they need and simply disciplining themselves to lie down each night, they opt for a series of pills or alcoholic beverages to get them where they want to be.

Even if there’s no prescription from the doctor, they don’t think twice about what will eventually become of this new habit they are developing. “My friend does this and so I will do this too!” is a common rationalization for taking medicine to sleep or drinking alcohol before bed. People who decide this for themselves are obviously following one of the “don’ts” of good sleep habits.

Insomnia is one of the eventual results of poor sleep and it may become the result of prolonged anxiety or even depression that keeps a person up night after night. A popular way of relieving yourself of insomnia is to begin a routine of yoga or meditation each day. This will teach your mind to relax and teach you to sit still so that it will eventually be easier to lie down and sleep each night as needed.

Yoga and meditation exercises teach us to focus on our breathing and to watch our thoughts and emotions as we practice sitting still. At first, it seems that our mind and our emotions are a river out of control. Eventually, after practicing for a few weeks, we begin to see the river slow down and our emotions become more calm and relaxed. This has a very profound effect on the way we sleep at night and brings an overall sense of well-being that was worth every bit of effort we put into it.

Generally speaking, it is important to avoid too much stress in life. Accomplishments and challenges are very important but keeping your head and maintaining a healthy balance is also essential to a happy life. Too much stress can eventually lead to a sleep disorder. Relaxation techniques, meditation and yoga will all help to relieve these problems before they become too serious. The fact is everybody should make sure that they are getting enough sleep and should refrain from doing the things that can cause a sleep disorder. It’s really great to have fun and to take life by the horns but don’t exchange this for the proper amount of sleep each night! You will have a lot more fun and be a lot more successful if you simply have a good night’s sleep!

A good nights sleep is said to be the best way to restore and rejuvenate your body and mind and when you cannot achieve it for long periods your life and health will suffer considerably. Many people live with insomnia or lack of natural sleep for different reasons.Lets first look at what insomnia is. Insomnia is a sleep disorder, the most common causes of insomnia is stress at work or home, financial or marital and certain medical conditions. Insomnia symptoms are generally lack of sleep for long periods of time, interrupted sleep or not being able to fall back to sleep once your sleep has been interrupted.

Insomnia treatment has been approached in many different ways and one of them is hypnosis.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that hypnosis is sleep, but effective hypnosis insomnia programs will only work if you are awake but in a deep state of relaxation. In this state, your unconscious mind is more open and accepting to suggestions. In the most successful programs, post-hypnotic suggestions are given to you to eliminate stress and set up a positive expectation of restful sleep.

How does hypnosis for insomnia actually work ? Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that is in between sleep and awareness; in this state one can access the subconscious level and thus, access most of your brain functions.

Hypnosis is used in treating many diseases most of which are mentally bases in order to induce a familiar pattern and bring back natural habits that once existed within you. Hypnosis for insomnia works in the same pattern, there may be required more than a few sessions to bring back your natural sleeping habit but at the same time hypnosis for insomnia is one of the safest and most natural way to bring back sleep in your life.

After thoroughly relaxing, the next step in self hypnosis insomnia therapy is understanding what compels you to suffer sleep disturbance. Another key component of a hypnosis insomnia course involves looking at small changes to your nightly ritual that will have the greatest effect on your ability to quickly fall asleep for sound and restful slumber.

Relieving stress is paramount for a hypnosis insomnia treatment to work. Visualizations can train the unconscious mind to automatically extinguish disturbing thoughts and feelings of anxiety and stress. These peaceful feelings stay with you through the day so that when it is time for bed, you can fall asleep quickly and rest throughout the entire night without interruption.

To permanently overcome insomnia, learning to relax with self-hypnosis is imperative, but it is not always possible to listen to a CD or watch a DVD. Learning how to give yourself post-hypnotic suggestions anytime, anywhere to bring about deep relaxation can easily be accomplished.

Hypnotherapy instructions for insomnia can be directives to the unconscious mind to use pleasant memories and fantasies to generate relaxation and and pleasant dreams. You will feel peaceful at bedtime and to have a positive expectation of sound and restful sleep. And that positive expectation will make you fall asleep quickly, and the dreams will make you sleep soundly and restfully all through the night.

Everyone responds differently to each type of hypnosis but most hypnosis insomnia program participants find their sleep issues are cured by hypnosis, and insomnia simply fades away like a bad dream.

Research has shown that occasional bouts of insomnia affect approximately forty percent of Americans and one out of every ten individuals suffers from more chronic insomnia that is ongoing. Sleeping pills can provide some individuals with relief from their sleeplessness and help improve their chances for getting a restful night ‘s sleep. Doctors will only prescribe sleep medication for insomnia as a last resort after other methods such as lifestyle alterations (changing one ‘s diet, exercising more regularly, etc.) and behavioral techniques have been undertaken. What are the signs that indicate that sleeping pills are necessary as a last resort? The National Sleep Foundation has set down guidelines as to when medicating a person for sleep relief becomes essential. First of all the cause of the sleeplessness has to be clearly identified. If difficulties with sleep patterns are affecting an individual ‘s ability to accomplish many routine daily tasks then sleeping pills might need to be taken under advisement. If behavioral techniques have been refused by the insomniac or have not helped, it may be time for sleeping pills. If a person is suffering from a form of insomnia-related distress, sleeping pills might remedy this. Many doctors start their patients on a small dosage of sleeping meds at the start of behavioral therapy as they favor using the two in conjunction with each other.

Two other instances where sleeping pills might be considered for relief is if the insomnia is short-term or temporary (for example if a person is mourning the loss of a loved one or suffered the loss of a job) and/or if the insomnia is connected in any way with a diagnosed medical or biological condition (for example, premenstrual syndrome) or a stressful event such as a job interview, public speaking or the fear of flying.

Other indications that sleeping pills may be in order are if you suddenly find that your memory is not so good, you have a slow response time and if you find it difficult to control your emotions (for example, crying at inopportune times or sudden bursts of anger). If you are drifting off to sleep at the wheel, that can prove dangerous (and in severe cases, fatal) to yourself and/or others. If performance problems at work have you concerned, if you find it difficult to concentrate on the simplest tasks and your attention span is very small then perhaps you are in need of a last resort to get a fitful night ‘s sleep.

When doctors prescribe sleeping pills to patients it is necessary for certain criteria to be met. First of all the lowest effective dosage should be given, it should be given on a nightly basis if short-term but if for long-term purposes, it should be intermittent, and finally it should be used in conjunction with psychology (such as behavioral techniques or approaches to good sleep).

Figuring out whether a person is suffering from short or long-term insomnia is so very important in deciding upon a solution to the problem. Behavior modifications are often very successful when short-term insomnia is related to a stressful life situation while long-term insomnia may have other considerations.

Over-the-counter medication (OTC) is an alternative to prescription sleeping pills. Over-the-counter sleeping pills are best used for short-term bouts of insomnia but changes to sleeping habits and/or lifestyle changes are encouraged. Becoming dependent on OTC sleeping pills is not advisable nor is it healthy and excessive use can actually increase the debilitating effects of insomnia.

Over-the-counter medications can have adverse effects on the body so it is important to pay attention to how one ‘s body reacts to the use of them. If you experience any of these common side effects then discontinue use of the pills- blurred vision, constipation, dried mouth and throat, dizziness, drowsiness the following day, forgetfulness and urinary retention.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the most common ingredient to be found in over-the-counter sleeping pills is antihistamine. Other names for this ingredient are diphenhydramine hydrochloride, diphenhydramine citrate and doxylamine succinate. The sleep experienced while taking OTC pills is not the exact same quality as the normal sleep of those not taking sleeping pills. It is believed that people who use OTC sleeping pills only experience deep sleep approximately five percent of the night (in comparison to ten to twenty-five of regular unmedicated sleepers).

When faced with the prospect of a large report, a looming deadline, or a major presentation, many people feel a great deal of stress in their lives, regardless of how well they’ve prepared, and how large their contribution needs to be. It is human nature to want to impress others, and the stress that we all feel from these kinds of situations can often manifest itself in the form of a sleepless night. This kind of insomnia is often called transient insomnia because it does not occur for long periods of time, and typically goes away after the stressful situation is dealt with.

Faced with these kinds of stressful situations, it is common for many people to cause themselves even more stress by worrying over getting a good night ‘s sleep. After all, how can you perform at your best if you feel groggy after failing to sleep the night before? In these situations, many individuals turn to sleeping pills, and unfortunately, this is one of the very worst things that you can do.

Sleeping pills are designed as a cure for insomnia, and very often they will work quite well, however there are many risks associated with sleeping pills, and many things to be aware of if you are taking them for a period of transient or intermittent insomnia.

First and foremost, the vast majority of sleeping pills on the market will lead to dependency if used too often. Not only is this an expensive proposition over the long term, but it is bad for your health, and will leave you needy if you cannot get your nightly fix. Fighting an addiction to sleeping medications is on par with quitting smoking; very few people who try to do it will be successful.

In addition, the root cause of your inability to sleep is caused by an outside source (the presentation, the project, etc.), and not by a physical issue like sickness or restless leg syndrome. By attempting to drug yourself with medication rather than dealing with the problem at hand, you will find your body and mind fighting the medication in order to stay awake and deal with the issue. While the medication will often win out in the end, you will lose valuable sleep time and energy dealing with a problem that didn’t exist beforehand, and this will leave you even worse off than you were before.

In order to deal with insomnia, especially a period induced by a stressful situation, you need to alleviate as much of the stress as possible before you fall asleep at night. By laying out your clothes for the next day, packing your things, reflecting on your preparedness, and creating a to-do list for the following day, you can often put your mind to rest, and deal with a large amount of the fears and anxieties you are experiencing.

Transient Insomnia, sometimes called temporary insomnia, is a condition which affects almost everyone at some point or another. This condition is often caused by mental stress, and typically lasts only one or two nights.

Unlike other types of insomnia, transient insomnia should not be considered a disease, and you should almost never attempt to treat the case with medication. By taking sleeping pills or other medications, your condition may worsen, as you will often feel even more stress the next day. In addition, repeated use of these pills will lead to dependence, and you will have a graduated case of insomnia without them.

In the majority of cases, people get transient insomnia because of stress at work, because of a looming deadline on a project, or because of family issues, not because of a physical or mental condition like other types of insomnia. In order to put these fears and anxieties aside, it is generally a good idea to spend some time actually acting on them, rather than attempting to fall asleep on the spot. Some people find that writing out a to-do list on paper for the following day will help them organize their thoughts.

The other reason that people will often suffer from transient insomnia is because of their physical activities. If you work out late at night, and then attempt to go to sleep too soon thereafter, you will usually suffer some sleep loss. The reason is that you are not giving your body enough time to relax and transition from a state of work to a state of rest. After a more intense workout, wind down slowly rather than ending abruptly, by walking for a period of at least five minutes before calling it quits. A longer-than-usual shower will also help to soothe your muscles and aid in putting your body to rest.

While overworking your body before sleep is a typical cause of transient insomnia, an even more common reason that people suffer from this condition is a lack of exercise. If you spend an entire day in front of your computer or your television screen, then you are not giving your body the exercise it needs, and all of your stored energy will go to waste. Because the body naturally stores energy from day to day, you will often have a full reserve of energy at the end of the day, and therefore have difficulty replenishing physical energy in sleep. This is often the cause of restless nights, but fortunately, if you fall in this category, it is fairly easy to fix. You simply need to get some more exercise. For the next few days at least, make a greater effort to get out and work your body so that you can get some rest at night. Take a walk outside, get some fresh air, and that should help you alleviate the condition.

If you find that transient insomnia is occurring more and more frequently as time goes by, you may wish to consult a psychologist. Most cases of severe insomnia do not appear overnight, they build and build until you find yourself unable to sleep. Psychologists are experts at determining the root cause of your inability to rest, and may provide some insight into the reasons why you, specifically, are having an issue with sleeping. By starting the process of recovery as soon as you notice an increase in the frequency of your transient insomnia, you will be better able to cope with it, and find a solution.

Okay, so it sounds a bit ridiculous, but there truly is such a term as sleep hygiene. As you truly understand the meaning of sleep hygiene and it is quite likely that your quality of sleep will be significantly improved.

While personal hygiene is known to be that thing we all do in order to keep clean and fresh smelling and dental hygiene involves keeping our teeth clean, healthy, and in our mouth, sleep hygiene is about those things that you can do in order to have a healthier and more restful sleep life.

Sleep hygiene encompasses all of those things that you can do which can help you to get ready for a restful nights sleep. It involves getting ready for bed, and preparing to easily fall asleep and stay asleep.

There are several tips that you can initiate if you are looking to improve your sleep habits by improving your sleep hygiene.

First of all it is important that you establish set times for sleeping and getting up each and every morning. This even includes the weekends. Regularly scheduled bedtimes are important for children and are equally as important for adults.

Unfortunately, there are many nights in which we get caught up trying to catch with the things that did not get taken care of during the day and we force ourselves to stay up later and later. But, this really does not solve the issue since by doing this we began to create a sleep deficit.

Without a set time for you to go to bed and wake up it ‘s hard to get your body in the habit of sleep.

Not only do you want to establish set times for going to bed in getting up every day you also want to learn how to relax your body if you want to work towards improving your sleep hygiene. It is never a good idea to simply throw on your pajamas and leap into the bed.

Typically if you try this approach your body may revolt as it is probably not ready for bed. You simply cannot go from exercising or eating or reading a racy novel to jumping into the bed closing your eyes and going to sleep. Your body just does not work that way! If you don’t learn how to relax, you will learn that it takes you much longer to fall asleep even though you feel totally exhausted.

So when you are trying to improve your sleep hygiene, it is important that you make the decision to relax at least an hour before you plan to go to bed. Begin to settle down and allow your body to be quiet and calm. Both meditation and yoga are excellent examples of ways in which you can take your body, mind, and soul into a state of relaxation.

Good sleep hygiene can also come when you will learn how to relax your body through deep breathing. So when you are busy focusing your concentration on your breathing, your body automatically begins to relax.

There are many techniques, such as progressive relaxation, in which you begin relaxing one part of your body and continue moving throughout the body parts until you are fully relaxed, that can help you to relax as you prepare for bed.

Having a plan for an effective sleep hygiene routine is critical for you to get the restful sleep that you need in order to obtain the restorative sleep your body craves.

Who ever said that sleep involves no activity? Sleep is one of the most active things a person can do! When you consider the many things that happen during sleep, you might be inclined to say that this is the busiest time of the day for our bodies and our brains.

One of the common activities that go on at night is dreaming and we often see, what is known as REM or “rapid eye movement” at night when a person’s eyelids flutter about uncontrollably as they fall into a deep state of dreaming. You may have seen this in a family pet such as a dog that is sleeping at your feet. His eyes will flutter about and he will kick his feet and bark at the squirrels and other dogs he thinks he sees. He thinks he is seeing these things in his dreams but actually he is only right there at your feet! REM sleep takes place in both people and animals of many kinds. It is a definite sign that there is a great deal of activity going on when we are sleeping.

Another activity that takes place during sleep is the talking you do in your sleep. Your mouth doesn’t just run itself while you are awake. Sometimes you may have entire conversations during the night and the next day you hear about it from your family members or friends! What was that you said about being madly in love with me? This is something that proves that a lot can happen at night when you thought you were doing nothing! We may reveal our most private truths if we aren’t careful and this may happen during, what we didn’t realize is actually one of the most active times around the clock for many people. Sleep is a dynamic activity that keeps us in a perpetual state of thought and emotion. These thoughts and feeling can even translate into physical activities of the muscles and bones.

Many people have also had to contend with the common activity of “sleep walking”. They get up out of bed and walk right out the bedroom door and into the kitchen for a bite to eat. Maybe they decide to have a quick conversation with the painting in the hall. Oops! It seems that they thought they were taking it easy and sleeping soundly but instead they were a lot busier than that. Apparently they still had some catching up to do with the painting in the hallway. They may even have moved out to the front yard to cut the grass or check the mail. Sleeping certainly can be a complicated activity to say the least.

Besides dreaming, talking and walking in our sleep, many people have even been known to experience intense physical pain in certain parts of their body simply because the dreams they have are translated to the pain center of their brain. This center of the brain can issue a warning signal to the part of the body that is supposed to be experiencing pain. The person may only dream that they are being kicked in the leg but they wake up and feel a strong pain right there in the muscle of their leg. This is another phenomena that takes place during sleep which shows how active our bodies and brains can be during the night. We can actually experience the entire spectrum of physical sensations during the night depending on how active out brain becomes and how lost in our dreams we may find ourselves.

Probably the most extreme cases of activity during sleep have involved people who commit actual crimes during their sleep and who have testified in court that they didn’t know what they were doing. Men have claimed to have killed their own wives while sleeping or to have stolen valuable articles from the next door neighbor. Their lawyers have had quite a time trying to convince the jury they were innocent and yet, these cases have been won in many cases because it is a proven fact that many things can happen while a person is asleep.

Sleeping is far from being an inactive experience. We all toss and turn during the night and struggle to find a comfortable position over and over. We may throw our arms against the wall or even fall out of bed entirely. Whether we sleep soundly or not, we have all certainly experienced very real nightmares where we wake up sweating and thought the whole thing was entirely real! The dynamic activity of sleep is nothing to fool around with so next time don’t say that sleep involves no activity. This may be the most active time of your life!
