We really liked this pillow because not only was it comfortable but it also has a funky shape!

Designed by a renowned neurologist this patented pillow works by making you sleep on your side and positioning your jaw so that your airway is kept open thus preventing snoring and also mild forms of obstructive sleep apnea.

This pillow has been clinically tested and most patients in the trial found that it greatly reduced or stopped their snoring altogether. The design and shape of the pillow also improves sleep quality and oxygen saturation allowing you to wake up refreshed and really feeling like you’ve had a good nights sleep!

In simple terms Sleep Apnea is a medical term given to a sleep disorder where the main symptom is characterized by short pauses in breathing during sleep. Sufferers literally stop breathing for a few seconds sometimes up to 30 times an hour. Often the sufferer will make a loud snorting, snoring or choking noise each time they resume normal breathing again.

Even though they may be completely unaware of their condition the end result is that the sufferer of Sleep Apnea does not get a proper nights sleep. Its this lack of good quality sleep that leaves sufferers of Sleep Apnea feeling tired and sleepy during the day and in extreme cases this can lead to chronic daytime fatigue.

Because suffers of Sleep Apnea are most often unaware that they have the condition Sleep Apnea can go a long time without being diagnosed. Quite often it is the sufferers partner that notices that they stop breathing for a short while or other symptoms that are commonly associated with Sleep Apnea such as snoring and daytime drowsiness that alert the sufferer to his or her condition.

Types of Sleep Apnea

There are three different types of Sleep Apnea, OSA or Obstructed Sleep Apnea, CSA or Central Sleep Apnea and mixed Sleep Apnea which is a combination of OSA and CSA.

Obstructed Sleep Apnea OSA

Obstructed Sleep Apnea is the most common type of Sleep Apnea and is caused by a blockage to the airway; usually because the soft tissues at the back of the throat collapse during sleep. When this happens the sufferer stops breathing for a short while which then causes them to wake up and so open the airway again. This can happen up to 100 times a night in severe cases. There are several forms of treatment that a doctor may prescribe to sufferers of Obstructive Sleep Apnea including the use of a CPAP mask which delivers a small amount of pressurized air to the sufferer thus keeping the airway open. If the sufferer is overweight then sometimes this can be a contributing factor in Obstructive Sleep Apnea and so a weight loss program may help.

Central Sleep Apnea CSA

Central Sleep Apnea is quite rare and is caused when the brain forgets to send a signal to the muscles to take a breath.

Don’t have much time to find out about sleep disorders? Or, are you exhausted from a lack of sleep? Well, not to worry. Before, you know it you will have read 10 reasons why people suffer from sleep disorders.1: There are two different kinds of insomnia.

Insomnia is classified as either being acute or chronic.

2: Approximately fifty-eight percent of adults claim to suffer from some type of sleeping disorder.

Busy lives, crazy work schedules, familial responsibilities, etc., all lead to people being continuously on the go. In order to extend the day, they feel it is normal or okay to cut into sleep time to accomplish all the tasks of the day.

3: One in four Americans takes some kind of sleep medication.

With so many choices in prescription sleep aids and over the counter drugs at the local store, people tend to rely on chemicals to help them doze off quickly. But some of the chemicals can be quite addictive and dangerous, and are highly misused.

4: Many sleep disorders stem from physical ailments.

Though worry is a common theme with insomniacs, perhaps you just had surgery, or are suffering from chronic back pain. It is hard to find that comfortable place on the mattress, which in turn, keeps you up all night sometimes.

5: Sleep apnea or snoring are very serious and can worsen sleep disorders.

Not only will this affect your partner ‘s sleep, but people who snore may suffer from sleep apnea, where you can actually stop breathing for a couple seconds during the night. Because this happens, sufferers may feel groggy and want to take naps during the day, causing sleeplessness at night.

6: Insomnia is actually poor sleep, not a complete lack of sleep.

It is a constant misconception, but if you were not getting any sleep at all, you would obviously not be able to function. Insomniacs may sleep in spurts, getting periods of rest, but never achieving rapid eye movement which causes dreams.

7: A sleeping disorder can be caused by a major life change.

Going back to the different kinds of insomnia, acute insomnia may only last for a couple of days. This may be due to a job change, menopause, pregnancy, losing a loved one, or anything that has caused a change in your daily schedule.

8: Diet plays an important part in having trouble sleeping.

The foods that we eat can cause problems during the night if our bodies have a hard time digesting it properly. Eating fatty or greasy foods in the evening will make for an uncomfortable time lying down. Also, eating close to bedtime causes you to stay awake until your body shuts down from processing the food.

9: Sometimes a psychologist can help you with your sleeping disorder.

Many times your primary care physician can help you with your sleeping problems, but it might behoove you to see a therapist to find out why you are lying awake. Perhaps it is stress or anxiety that needs looking into in order for you to feel more rested.

10: Napping will make your sleep disorder much worse.

You are not helping your body by trying to catch up on sleep during the day. This will only make it harder for you to feel drowsy when you should, throwing yourself into an offbeat sleeping pattern.

The term sleep disorder is broadly used to describe a medical condition involving a disruption of the sleep patterns of a person. Some sleep disorders can be so severe that they actually interfere with a person ‘s normal activities and compromise their physic, mental and emotional functioning. Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders, afflicting an estimated 60 million Americans each year.

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that is characterized by a person ‘s inability to fall asleep or remain asleep; or it can be a combination of both. Many insomniacs report that they are not able to “turn off their mind” or close their eyes and get a decent night ‘s sleep. They may report falling asleep for brief periods then waking or they may report waking at unusually early hours. Insomnia has been shown to increase as the person ages and of the 60 million people who are affected, more women than men are afflicted with it.

In fact, women are twice as likely as men to have insomnia.

There are several different types of insomnia. Transient or short term insomnia only lasts a few weeks or even just a single night. Intermittent insomnia is short term with on and off episodes of sleeplessness and does not occur often. Chronic insomnia is ongoing and occurs at least three nights a week, spanning over a month or even more. Each of these types of insomnia can be ether primary, meaning that it is not related to another health issue or secondary which means that it may be caused by a medical condition or some type of external factors.

A diagnosis of insomnia is not always straightforward and simple. Because it can occur as a secondary issue, it may be overshadowed by other health problems. However, a doctor may assess a person and make a diagnosis based on several factors.

* Daytime tiredness
* Inability to fall asleep
* Inability to stay asleep for a reasonable time
* Poor focus and concentration
* Poor memory
* Impaired motor skills and coordination
* Irritability
* Impaired social interaction
* Depression or weepiness

These symptoms are may be accompanied by other conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and medications. A physician can assess these issues and determine if the insomnia is primary or secondary and from there can determine a course of action for treatment. The doctor may ask the patient to keep a sleep diary for a few weeks to see a pattern of sleep activity as well as waking activities that may contribute to the problem.

There are many ways of treating insomnia but they are dependent upon the cause and type. For instance, if the insomnia is the result of a health problem, then often treating the health condition will clear up the insomnia. Behavior modifications may also be in order such as cutting out drinking alcohol at night. There are prescription medications that may be used, but these are generally a last resort.

Some things that the insomniac may try include taking melatonin (a natural remedy for promoting sleep), chamomile tea before bed, relaxation therapy, sleep restriction and reconditioning. There are ways to overcome a sleep problem and it is important to get a handle on it early so that it does not cause greater health problems later.

Common sleeping disorders often begin unnoticed. We might just be having signs of some minor problems but we don’t think too much of it. Then we may begin to have difficulty falling or staying asleep but think this is only a “passing phase”. Little do we know, we are already experiencing, what doctors would diagnose as insomnia, a sleep disorder that results to sleepiness at other times of the day. Insomnia is the most well-known sleep disorder but it is still undiagnosed in thousands of people. It causes slow reactions in our nervous system and poor mental concentration. These factors might just lead to accidents and lesser productivity throughout the day. Stress is also considered one of the major reasons why one out of three adults experiences some degree of insomnia at one time or another.

If we don’t catch up, our body starts to get confused and this can eventually lead to a sleep disorder. First we find ourselves irritable and slow. Then we lose our ability to fully relax and we are in for a much bigger problem down the road.

Common sleeping disorders often begin unnoticed. We might just be having signs of some minor problems but we don’t think too much of it. Then we may begin to have difficulty falling or staying asleep but think this is only a passing phase.

A less common but quite alarming case of insomnia is the chronic insomnia. This is known as a severe case of insomnia which is caused by too much stress and by our body’s chemistry and medical condition. This second case of insomnia is less common than the first but still quite common overall. It also tends to go undiagnosed in many people.

Sleepy people who experience a gradual loss of muscle tone (called cataplexy) may be experiencing another type of sleep disorder known as Narcolepsy. This is a sleep related disease that affects the NREM or Non Rapid Eye Movement sleep. Narcoleptic patients experience sudden muscle weakening which sometimes causes them to fall. They may fall into a NREM sleep phase almost instantly and this can be extremely dangerous. A simple act of happiness or laughter may trigger what is called a cataplectic attack where the person just falls asleep and tips over! A related disease called sleep paralysis is also alarming and can occur in narcoleptics where they lose control of their muscles especially when lying down before they go to bed.

Children commonly experience a sleep disorder familiarly known as bedwetting which is actually called Nocturnal Enursis. This ordinarily happens during NREM sleep as does talking in your sleep and sleep walking. These disorders are also common amongst children.

Sleep Apnea is a breathing disorder which is not understood by many people and which is therefore undiagnosed in many people. It is still quite common however and is caused by the muscle and tongue relaxation on the soft palate at the throat’s base. This is the part of the throat which allows an individuals air passage to collapse especially those with narrow airways. It creates a sleeping disorder somewhat similar to snoring but it is actually a lot more serious than just snoring. Sleep apnea causes a person to lose the much needed REM phase of their sleep and thereby depletes their energy and dangerously affects their brain chemistry. A person with sleep apnea is more prone to accidents and poor health as well as poor performance at work or school.

Sleeping disorders can be avoided if we raise our awareness about them and take preventive measures to stop them. We must make sleeping a daily habit and try to get a better night’s sleep all the time. If we make sure and do this, we will surely reap the benefits soon!
